Since the advent of next-generation sequencing, the cost of generating genomic data has been steadily declining, with plant genomics research moving beyond single reference genomes of diploid species.
The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, an affiliate laboratory for the US Department of Energy, is at the cutting edge of plant research, tackling complex datasets in order to make a significant impact on agricultural science. Adam Healey, a computational biologist with HudsonAlpha and former graduate of QAAFI, will showcase some of the research at HudsonAlpha, including the sequencing of sugarcane and the generation of pan-genome resources for Setaria and Sorghum.

Adam is a former graduate of the University of Queensland and the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, where he researched the generation of renewable biofuels from eucalypt biomass, under the supervision of Prof. Robert Henry. Since graduating from UQ in 2017, he has worked as a computational biologist for the Genome Sequencing Centre in the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.
