Alternative Protein Rich Ingredients For Sustainable Poultry Production

Abstract
Currently soybean meal is the major protein ingredient added to the diet (~30% inclusion rate) to satisfy protein and amino acid needs of chickens. Australia is a net importer of soybean meal, importing over 1M tons of soybean meal annually, with fluctuating costs and risks associated with supply disruption. In this presentation, the potential of alternative protein-rich ingredients to replace imported soybean meal in chicken feed will be presented.

Dr Elham (Ellie) Assadi Soumeh is an Associate Professor in Animal Science and Production at the University of Queensland. She holds degrees in Animal Science and Nutrition, with a PhD from Aarhus University focused on branched-chain amino acid metabolism in pigs. She previously worked as a Senior Scientist at Cargill in the Netherlands, leading applied research in monogastric nutrition. Her research investigates how nutrition shapes gut microbiota and influences metabolism, health, and productivity in poultry and swine. Her work emphasizes sustainable feeding and precision nutrition, with findings widely published and presented at international scientific forums.
