Modulation of gut microbiota to improve piglets gut health during post-weaning

Abstract
Weaning is one of the most stressful stages in a piglet's life, marked by sudden separation from the sow and abrupt changes in social structure, diet and environment. These stressors often reduce feed intake, impairing gut morphology, reducing nutrient absorption and disturbing gut microbial composition. Modulating gut microbiota through diet offers a promising strategy to mitigate these effects. This study investigated the impacts of post-weaning diet on gut microbiota in newly weaned piglets. The findings provide deeper understanding of how piglet gut microbiota responds to post-weaning diet, helping to inform the formulation of suitable diets.

My name is Viet Hai Tran, a third-year PhD candidate at the Centre for Animal Science, QAAFI. I hold a Master of Philosophy from the School of Agriculture and Food Science before starting my PhD. My research explores how the gut microbiome shapes animal health and performance, with a particular focus on post-weaning piglets. Through nutritional interventions combined with metagenomic approaches, I aim to uncover practical strategies to modulate the gut microbiome and support healthier, more resilient animals.
