Abstract

AgriFutures Australia promotes innovation and growth in rural industries, with its Emerging Industries Program focusing on high-growth agricultural sectors. This seminar outlines a project conducted by UQ, QUT, Griffith University, and Food Innovation partners aimed at improving the impact of genetic and genomic investments for 22 emerging industries. The project reviewed the background and status of Australian crop and animal industries, assessed the demand for superior genetic material, evaluated available resources for accessing genetic material, and considered regulatory factors. This talk will describe the nature of the project, our information-gathering methods, and the criteria used to assess each industry's access or lack thereof to superior genetic resources.

Dr Bradley Campbell

Dr Bradley Campbell, with over 15 years in plant biotechnology, specialises in plant molecular genetics for crop improvement, focusing on sustainable grain and horticultural crop production for food security, feed, and bio-industrial uses. Since 2019, he has worked on conservation and improvement of taro (Colocasia spp.) for the Pacific Islands, addressing climate threats like rising sea levels, salinity, and drought. His collaborations include genotyping the taro germplasm at CePaCT (SPC, Fiji) with FAO for future food security. Dr Campbell's projects span from enhancing salt tolerance in New Caledonia to studying South-East Queensland's wetlands, targeting resilience in key food crops.
