University of Queensland crop biotechnologist Dr Karen Massel is one of the state’s 2025 Young Tall Poppy Science Award finalists, celebrating her pioneering contributions to science and dedication to public engagement.
Now in its 27th year, the Young Tall Poppy Science Awards are an initiative of the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) to celebrate researchers who combine cutting-edge science with a genuine passion for engaging and inspiring others.
“It feels great to be recognised for the work that you do,” Dr Massel said.
"To me it is not just research, it's about connecting with the public about the kind of science that we do, and agriculture doesn't always get highlighted in the way it deserves.”
Dr Massel’s work at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation focuses on translating fundamental plant science research into crops using biotechnological tools.
“At the moment I am leading a project with industry developing more sustainable tropical forage grasses for cattle feed,” she said.
“In the past I’ve done a lot of work in grain quality in sorghum and trying to enhance the nutritive properties of the grains, mostly to benefit the poultry industry.
“But I’m also passionate about redesigning and developing new biotech tools that can benefit growers by expediting breeding strategies.
“I love the idea of creating novel genetic variation with gene editing to create more sustainable food products, but I also want the consumer to be happy with how we’ve made it.
“So, I spend a lot of my time speaking to the public about my work and finding ways to have open conversations about genetically modified and gene edited foods, as their opinion is critical to the success of these future food crops” she said.
The Young Tall Poppy awards are held in each state and territory with the program recognising outstanding scientists from all disciplines.
The Queensland 2025 Young Tall Poppy of the Year will be announced at a function at Queensland Museum on 9 September.
